SSB organized a grand awareness campaign against Human Trafficking and Child labour in Sonbarsa, Distt. Sitamarhi, Bihar. The programme included awareness through Folk songs, street plays, experience sharing and audio visual inputs. The campaign was also linked to National Skill development Corporation of Govt. of India to train and upgrade the Skills of unemployed youths. The programme was attended by thousands of local villagers. Shri Bijendra Prasad Yadav, Minister of Power, Prohibition, Excise, Registration deptt. ,Govt. of Bihar & Smt Kumari Manju Verma, Social Welfare Minister, Govt. of Bihar were the Chief guests. The programme was organized on the lead and concept of Director General, SSB, Smt. Archana Ramasundaram, IPS.

SSB being the border guarding Force on Indo Nepal Border frequently encounters the problem of Trafficking of women and children. Battalions of SSB, deployed in East Champaran, West Champaran, Sitamarhi, Supaul, Araria and Kishanganj have been actively involved in curbing this problem through arrest and rescue operations. However for long term impact it was felt that the affected population be made aware about the ill effects and consequences of Human Trafficking and child labour. Therefore this programme was organized in this area.

 SSB organized a one of its kind awareness programme on Anti Human Trafficking at Higher Secondary School Sonbarsa on 16/09/2017. During this  a wide range of activities were organized  which included talks by Govt. organizations and Non Govt. organizations, experience sharing by rescued victims,  distribution  of sports items and distribution of cycles and tricycles to the trafficked victims and handicapped persons.

In order to sensitize the School Children on the issue, a painting competition was organized in 39 Schools of bordering areas. Their paintings were displayed on the venue. Two specially designed Buses “Jagriti Bus” for undertaking awareness programme in the border villages alongwith speakers on the subject an pamphlets were also flagged off by the chief Guest.

 To make the people self reliant and self sufficient, efforts were being made to include Skill development progammes for rural youth. A MOU has been signed between SSB and National Skill development corporation (NSDC) for imparting various Job oriented training to border youth.  A training programme of 60 youths for 45 days in plumbing trade craft and Security Supervisor was also launched on the occasion. It is also worth mentioning that from the earlier concluded training of 30 youths in Electrician trade, 18 of have them received their placement letters also.

          Chief Guest of the occasion expressed that his Govt. is serious on this issue and is involved in supporting the concerned agencies in rescue and relief of trafficked victims. He also applauded the efforts of SSB in taking this initiative of creating awareness amongst the Border Populace by organizing such important Workshop involving multiple agencies. He also assured to extend all possible assistance to SSB and other Govt. and Non Govt. organizations in curbing this menace.

 Director General, SSB called upon the people in the bordering areas to work hand in hand with SSB and other law enforcing agencies in order to eradicate this problem. She stressed for proper and effective implementation of Skill development programmes for the youth in this area so as to create Job opportunity. The programme was also attended by Shri Vivek Srivastav, IPS Joint Director, Intelligence Bureau, Patna in addition to different Government and non Government agencies  including Prayas, Pratham, Centre Direct, Bachpan Bachao andolan, Adithi, Open shelter, Save the children, Bal sakha, Bhumika Vihar and Nirdesh.

It is worth to mention that in 2016, SSB rescued 533 victims from clutches of human traffickers and also arrested 160 human traffickers. This year in 118 different cases, 465 victims have been rescued from clutches of human traffickers 141 human traffickers were arrested.
